All students taking the 9 hour course will be required to take a capsize/swim test or those with disAbilities will take a float test while wearing a life jacket. The capsize/swim and float test is designed to help the student feel comfortable in the water with a capsized dinghy and build confidence in the safety of a life jacket. All course are accessible to persons with disAbilities as possible - please contacts us before taking the class to make sure we can accommodate your particular disAbility. Upon successful completion of the Basic Sailing Course, students have the benefit of fulfilling the skills necessary to learn the basic of sail boating and you gain the skills to be a competent and safe sailor. Once a youth successfully completes the course he/she receives a certificate indicating that he/she is an honorary pirate. 105 BIG BOAT SAILING
Prerequisites: None
Description: Able to sail a keelboat OR multihull of 20'-30' with auxiliary power in light to moderate winds and sea/lake conditions in familiar waters independently.
Great course for those that want to learn to sail without the need to do a capsize recovery or get wet as in our 100 course!

PHYSICAL SAILING SIMULATOR

This course is for persons wanting to learn basic sailing skills for keelboat OR catamaran, & trimaran (multihulls) sailing and/or for person wanting to expand on their sailing skills. Welcome aboard for the sailing adventure of a lifetime on beautiful Lake Coeur d’Alene. Hoist the sails, capture the wind and find a new passion. Learn to sail with skill and confidence in our 12 hour course (try our 1 or 1.5 hour intro to sailing course) with your patient and friendly Sailing Instructor.  Tuition includes 12 hours of sailing instruction, learn-to-sail booklet, utilization of our physical sailing simulator, Catalina 22 or Reynolds 33 catamaran, and equipment. A comprehensive learn-to-sail book is available for an additional cost or bring your own book. Upon completion of the 9 hour series, you’ll receive a certificate of your new abilities.  Participants must have basic swimming ability or comfortable floating in a life jacket. Come dressed for the outdoors (jacket, sunscreen, sunglasses) with deck shoes or non-marking athletic shoes. Let’s go sailing! The boat used for this course is our Catalina 22 Sport Keelboat OR Reynolds 33 Catamaran. All courses are accessible to persons with disAbilities as possible - please contacts us before taking the class to make sure we can accommodate your particular disAbility. Our Reynolds 33 Catamaran is preferred by sailors with disAbilities due to it's low angle of heeling as compared to a keelboat and it's more accommodating seating. This is also a great course for those wanting to learn to sail a dinghy but do not want to deal with the cold water or purchase a lot of cold weather sailing gear yet.

Classes during the summer (June-Aug) our taught on our 33' catamaran due to lighter wind conditions. Our catamaran performs far better in the summer than any keelboat due to its high performance rig and low wetted surface. Its hard to learn to sail with little wind but not on our 33' catamaran.

TWIN HARBORS ADVENTURE

Few adventures bring you as close to nature as this excursion will. From viewing seals, whales, otters, elk, pileated woodpeckers, flying squirrels, to the rare Van Dyke’s salamanders, you’ll discover the great beauty of The Twin Harbors area (Grays & Willapa Harbors).

Willapa Bay is the second largest estuary on the Pacific Coast and includes more than 260 square miles of water surface. You will camp on or near Long Island - the Pacific Coast's largest estuarine island. This island includes a rare 274-acre remnant of old growth lowland coastal forest. Many of the red cedar trees in this grove are more than 900 years old!

In 1788 Robert Gray discovered his name sake Grays Harbor aboard the Lady Washington (a replica of this ships is moored in Grays Harbor - this ship was used in the movie "Pirates of Caribbean"). Grays Harbor is home to shell Island, one of the largest harbor seal colonies on the west coast, and the largest charter fishing fleet in the Pacific Northwest.

Sail aboard the Windwalker, our 33’ high performance cruising catamaran. If you are a sailor wanting to learn the ins and outs of high performance catamaran cruising, this trip is for you. You will get to sail through protected bays and open ocean. This trip is unlike any offered in the world and is more like a river rafting trip than a cocktail cruise, so be prepared for active hands on adventure/sailing. Space is limited so sign up early.

Class size is limited to 6 students. COST $1195.00 per person

ATTENTIONS: Due to the weather conditions, tides, currents, wildlife migrations, and variety within these marine environments, participants will possibly see more or less than is stated here in.

WHAT IS NEXT?

If you have taken all our main courses such as 105 & 200, & 100 (for those that want small boat experience), then the next step is to practice practice practice. Having sailing experience is the most important aspect when wanting to rent or charter a sailboat and of course become a safe, competent sailor. Many rental or charter sailboat businesses will ask you about your experience level and many of these businesses will not even ask if you have a sailing certification because a certification without experience means almost nothing when they consider the safety of their boat and those on board. There are many sailors with lousy sailing skills with certifications from various organizations! If you want to gain on-the-water sailing experience such as sailing on the Ocean team up with an experienced sailor before venturing into unfamiliar and rough waters, this is the ultimate way to become a great sailor (take our 105 course if you have not done so). It also is important that you own a sailboat and regularly sail your sailboat; nothing can replace tiller time. Also a great way of gaining valuable sailing experience is by joining a local sailing club and doing some racing to practice the rules of the water ways and advance sail trim, etc. Another step is getting a skippers license if you plan to take anyone out sailing for hire or you want extensive boating knowledge. Taking a safe boating course is also a good idea and is required in many states unless you have a skippers license. Keeping a log book is what you must do to show your experience, as many businesses will require it for boat rental or charter (esp. big boats). It can also be great fun to watch your log book fill up. Have fun, and fair winds!
